Unfortunately most of you probably live somewhere in the world that is subject to some type of natural disaster. Perhaps they are common, or maybe not, but it is always best to be prepared. Those of you who live in areas that are often plagued by hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes know this all too well. If you live in one of these areas you have probably had it drilled into you for years that you should have an 'emergency kit' ready at all times in case disaster strikes.
Emergency Kits
Most often it is recommended that these disaster 'emergency kits' contains items like water, changes of clothes, radios etc to enable survival for a few days after a major disaster. However unfortunately it isn't always all over in a day or two. For anyone who has witnessed or lived through some of the dramatic events of the hurricanes of recent years can attest to this. You could easily find yourself in an area that is without power and water for days of even weeks.
Natural Disasters
It has happened on a smaller scale in many other places, but a prime, dramatic example is the devastation of hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The result of these situations can mean extreme food and water shortages besides all the other related problems. We all know that in these cases looters and bandits come out of the cracks to take advantage of the crises. But when even the average Joe can't find food and water for himself and his family, people can really be tempted to do things they otherwise wouldn't. During these times many gangs roam the streets and neighborhoods looking for victims and places to rob. So you ought to be equally prepared to deal with them as the other factors you are facing.
Self Defense Items
Adding a few self-defense items could be absolutely essential to your survival in a time like this. With armed gangs controlling the streets you will certainly want some type of weapons to defend yourself. One major factor to consider is that you will likely be out numbered, which means you will need to be as stealthy as a Ninja to survive! So what do ninjas use that could make great accessories to your kit?
Range Weapons
Some type of range weapons, especially those that are silent would be especially practical (and of course only for self-preservation in the face of certain death). Think ninja blow dart guns, throwing stars and chain type weapons. Also having the right clothing to be able to conceal yourself to avoid confrontation is essential - what better than a full ninja suit with mask and ninja shoes? Then if you don't live on the ground floor of a building, you have to account for an alternate escape route - could a ninja grappling hook or ninja foot spikes and and claw help you safely get out alive? Hopefully you will never experience such a dire situation, but if you do - BE PREPARED!
